| AOL Radio re-launch1st July 2008 The Internet radio service, AOL Radio, has been re-launched. The service consists of over 200 Internet radio stations on AOL Radio, covering numerous music and talk genres, plus around 150 local US stations on CBS Radio, which is one of the main US commercial radio broadcasters. The Internet streams on AOL Radio are using 128 kbps MP3 for the broadband streams, and the audio quality is a lot better than you get via DAB due to DAB using the outdated and MP2 audio codec, which performs far worse than MP3 does at a bit rate of 128 kbps. The AOL Radio service is "powered by CBS Radio", which probably means that it's actually powered by the personalised radio station company last.fm, because CBS bought last.fm last year, and the website for the UK version of AOL Radio (which doesn't give access to the 200+ stations mentioned above) states that it is powered by last.fm. Although at the current time it's temporarily disabled, AOL Radio allows you to skip tracks if you don't like them, so the service probably uses last.fm's software to select what tracks to play depending on the user's preferences. AOL Radio will also be launching on the iPhone and iTouch in July once a new application has been released for the devices.
