Channel 4 awarded new national DAB multiplex licence

19th July 2007

Channel 4 has been awarded the new national DAB multiplex licence that will go on-air from July next year. The multiplex will carry ten new stations, a podcast service and space for 2 mobile TV channels.

The new stations that the multiplex will carry are listed in the table below, and the most interesting new stations are the first three, which will all be run by Channel 4.

However, as you can see from the table, all of the stereo stations will be using 112 kbps, which is an absolute disgrace.

Funny how you've missed the black talk/music station Colourful Radio off your list?

Here's a list of the station line-up that Ofcom announced when they awarded the national multiplex licence to the 4 Digital Group:

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2007/07/nr_20070706

As you can see, Colourful wasn't included in the 4 Digital application. I do vaguely recall that Colourful has been added to the station line-up since, but at the end of the day the 4 Digital multiplex isn't even going to launch anyway as things currently stand - some of the 4 Digital stations, most likely the Channel 4-owned ones and maybe a few others, but no-one knows which ones, look like they're going to launch on the Digital One multiplex which has currently only got 3 or 4 stations on it. The 4 Digital multiplex may never launch, or if it does launch at all it'll probably be in 2 or 3 years' time.

At the end of the day, this website primarily consists of news articles, so it would be impossible to go round changing all the things that have changed since I originally wrote the article. For example, in the station line-up above, plans to launch Sky News Radio and Virgin Viva have both been shelved completely.

Ch.4 DAB

What a joke some of these TV companies really are when it comes to running radio stations, etc. You know, if I were in charge at OFCOM I would be more than keen to hand over the 3rd DAB mux to the BBC who can then lease space out to interested parties.

C'mon Ch.4 get your finger, out of your ****!

When listening to Colourful radio they keep mentioning their inclusion on the forthcoming 3rd DAB mux, but you can tell, they've no idea when its going to launch. I feel so sorry for them, having worked so hard to get this excellent station, up and running.
