DAB sounds worse than FM, Internet radio & radio via digital TV
FM stations WILL NOT be switched off in 2015 - that date has been dishonestly set early to scare people into buying DAB now. FM stations won't be switched off until around 2020

EU backs DVB-H to be used in Europe for mobile TV

25th July 2007

The EU "telecoms" commissioner has decided that the DVB-H system should be the European standard for mobile TV.

She has said something similar to this earlier this year, but according to the BBC news article, this time she seems to be getting more serious about forcing the issue:

"The use of the DVB-H standard will be "legally encouraged" among all 27 member states with the view to mandating use, if necessary, next year, said Ms Reding."

As the BBC article suggests, I think the EU will be keen to repeat the global success of the GSM mobile phone system, and as DVB-H is the European candidate system for mobile TV, that'll be why she's backing it -- although it is better than nearly all of the other systems anyway in terms of the technologies it uses.

This won't go down well with the DAB industry though, because the main competing system in Europe is DMB, which is an extension of the DAB system to allow it to carry mobile TV channels. Also, the DAB-IP system is already being used in the UK on the Digital One multiplex and the new national multiplex will also be using DAB-IP to carry probably 2 more mobile TV channels, so it will be interesting to see what she intends to do about existing mobile TV services that don't use DVB-H. Personally, I doubt she'd stop existing services transmitting, but this nonetheless looks like being a major blow for the DAB industry.
