First DVB-H commercial launch takes place in Italy

3 Italia have launched the first commercial DVB-H mobile TV service in Europe. The service provides 6 mobile TV channels with more to come at a later date.

The service costs 49 euros (about £30) per month for the all-inclusive package, which also includes 1 hour's worth of mobile phone calls and 1 GB of data downloads per month.

Coverage already consists of 75% of the population (40 million), which is provided by 1000 low power (between 5 W to 2.5 kW) transmitters (the transmitters are likely co-sited at existing mobile phone base station transmitter sites).

The multiplex is using the 8K subcarriers mode with QPSK modulation, a convolutional error correction code rate of 1/2 along with using MPE-FEC with a code rate of 3/4.
