First German DMB service carrying a radio station using AAC+

5th June 2006

According to the Wohnort DAB website, the first DMB mobile TV service in Germany has launched and it is carrying a radio station using using the MPEG-4 AAC+ audio format.

It makes sense to use AAC+ for the radio station to use AAC+ because that it the format that the audio channels of the mobile TV channels are using, so it would be ridiculous to use the grossly inefficient MP2 audio codec that is used on the old existing DAB system.

Hopefully we will see more radio stations using the AAC+ format being launched on the numerous mobile TV services that are planned to be launched across Europe in the next year or two, and this will speed up the transition from using MP2 to AAC+ on DAB as well. The UK and Denmark will have to wait a few years before we can change over to using AAC+, but all other countries that adopt the DAB system will now very likely use the DAB+ variant and will use AAC+ from the start.
