Revo launches first ever Wi-Fi/DAB/DAB+-ready/FM receiver

12th December 2007

The Revo Blik RadioStation is the first ever radio receiver that combines support for Wi-Fi Internet radio, DAB/DAB+, and it is also the first ever "DAB+-ready" receiver, in that it is the first receiver to go on sale that supports DAB+ without requiring a software upgrade -- i.e. the DAB+ software has been pre-loaded onto the receiver.

The Blik RadioStation is using Frontier-Silicon's new Venice 6 Wi-Fi/DAB/DAB+/FM receiver module, for which there are a range of products due to come out "by the end of the year", as reported on here back in early September. The other manufacturers that are planning to release products using the Venice 6 include Bush, Grundig, Magicbox, Ministry of Sound and Tivoli. Pure is also planning to bring out Wi-Fi Internet radios next year, so presumably some of those will be combined with DAB/DAB+ as well.

All receivers using the Venice 6 modules will be at least DAB+-upgradeable by default, and some of the other products that will be sold in the UK will be DAB+-upgradeable and receivers sold in Europe will have the DAB+ software pre-installed. But Revo has chosen to install Frontier-Silicon's recently-finished DAB+ software implementation on all Blik RadioStation receivers whether or not they will be sold in the UK or in Europe.

Revo Blik RadioStation products are actually due in at Revo on 19th December, but they can be pre-ordered on their website for a price of £150.

Combined Wi-Fi/DAB/DAB+/FM receivers are the ideal choice of digital radio receivers at the present time considering that DAB+ stations are likely to launch in about three years' time, and because Internet radio is becoming more popular and because of the choice of stations and the audio quality is usually better on Internet radio station streams than it is on DAB.
